Deleting an Instagram account: personal, business, and a temporary pause
You can leave Instagram in different ways: temporarily hide the profile, switch a business account to personal, or delete the profile forever. These are different scenarios with different effects on content, stats, and the handle.

Three scenarios: pause, type change, deletion
Temporary deactivation (or a “pause”) is for when you need a break without losing history: the profile is hidden; signing in usually restores access.
Switching business or professional to personal is for when stats and contact buttons are no longer needed. That’s not closing the account.
Full deletion is irreversible: posts, archived Stories, followers, and account chats go with it.
Temporary deactivation
It works when you’re tired of the feed or want to hide for a while but aren’t ready to lose content. Usually you pick a reason, confirm with a password, and hide the profile.
Coming back is most often just signing in again. Exact wording (“temporarily disable,” “deactivate”) depends on the UI version.
Before a pause:
- warn the team if it’s a work account
- turn off or pause ads
- make sure you know the password and backup email/phone
Business → personal profile
Business or professional mode gives insights, header contacts, and an easier ads link. Switching back to personal usually turns those off.
Closing a business profile “for select people” like a private personal account often isn’t possible in the same sense: a commercial storefront is built for openness. You can limit Stories and parts of the audience with other privacy settings — don’t confuse that with deletion.

Full account deletion
Deletion usually goes through Accounts Center or the Instagram deletion page in a browser: pick the account, a reason, and confirm.
After confirm, Meta’s policy on timing and a short cancel window (if your version has one) applies — don’t rely on rumors from old 2020 guides.
Re-registering with the same email is sometimes possible, but the same handle and the same feed are not. You can’t bring followers back with a button.
Checklist before deletion:
- export or manually save key photos and videos
- unlink ads accounts and payments
- revoke staff access
- confirm you’re deleting the right profile, not a neighbor in Accounts Center
Recovery and alternatives
After full deletion you generally can’t restore the same account. A new profile means a new name, audience, and warm-up.
If the goal is quiet, not burning bridges, try temporary deactivation or simply staying silent without deleting.
