How to unblock a person on Instagram
Blocking on Instagram limits contact between two profiles: follows, messages, and some public interactions stop working. If the decision was made in the heat of the moment, you can undo it in settings or on the person’s page.
Below: a safe action order, what happens after unblocking, and cases when the profile can’t be found. This piece is not about restoring access to an account limited by the platform. Meta note is on the page.
What changes after a block
After a block, interaction between accounts is heavily limited: the person can’t normally find your profile, see posts, write in Direct, or tag you. Some traces of past chat may remain in message history — that doesn’t mean contact is restored.
This is a user setting, not a platform sanction. Don’t confuse it with a limit on your own account: that case goes through official notices and security checks, not the blocked list.
Blocking fits when you need to stop unwanted contact. If the issue is only pushy comments, first try softer privacy and restrict settings.
How to find the blocked list
Safest start is your profile: open settings, go to privacy, and find the blocked accounts list. Item names and placement differ by app version — follow the meaning, not old tutorial screenshots.
The list shows profiles you blocked yourself. Open the right card, confirm handle and avatar, then choose Unblock and confirm. Before confirming, double-check it’s the right person.
Before unblocking, check:
- the current handle — it may have changed
- avatar and bio if names look similar
- whether you need access to chat and content again
- whether Restrict is a better fit
Unblocking from a profile page
If the profile appears via search or an old chat, unblock is also available on their page. Open the actions menu by the profile, pick the matching command, and confirm. Handy when the list is long.
Don’t confuse the person’s profile with lookalikes and fan accounts. When unsure, return to the block list — you’ll see the saved entry rather than relying on search.
If the account can’t be found
A missing profile in search isn’t always about your block. They may have changed the handle, temporarily deactivated, deleted the page, or limited access another way. Don’t check via sites that promise to “show a hidden profile” and ask you to sign in.
First open the blocked list and search the old handle there. If there’s no entry, check old chat and saved mentions. When details don’t match, safer to change nothing until you confirm identity.
Don’t enter your password on services that promise to:
- find any private or deleted profile
- lift someone else’s block in one click
- restore chat without account access
- speed up unblock for a fee
What happens after unblock
Unblocking doesn’t restore the old relationship automatically. Follows, notifications, and privacy settings still apply separately: if the profile is private, they’ll need to request a follow; you’re not obliged to follow back.
Decide whether you want to resume contact. For work accounts, lock communication rules: who replies in Direct, which messages get hidden, when the talk moves to email or a site form.
Account security and boundaries
Blocking doesn’t replace account protection. Use a unique password, two-factor authentication, and review active login sessions — especially if you ever entered credentials on a third-party site or shared access with a helper.
For a public blog, set moderation rules early: which comments get deleted, which questions move to DMs, and when a full block is needed. A consistent policy lowers conflict and makes audience work predictable.
FAQ
Will the person know I unblocked them?
Usually there’s no separate push. They can find the profile and follow again if settings allow.
How is this different from a platform account ban?
Here you put the person on a block list yourself. An Instagram ban is different: the platform cuts access to your own profile.
Why is there no Unblock button?
Often the profile is deleted/unavailable, or you’re looking at the wrong account. Wait for the profile to appear or search via the blocked list.
Do I need third-party apps like Grids?
No. The official app or web version is enough. Third-party clients add password risk.
Are Block and Restrict the same?
No. Restrict is softer (you alone see their comments). Block is harder: a full mutual visibility break.
Does the follow come back after unblock?
No — the old follow doesn’t restore automatically. Each side follows again if needed.
Can I block the person again right away?
Usually yes, but the service may temporarily limit rapid repeats. Don’t use blocking as a way to pressure someone.
